Archibald Stuart was born near Staunton, Va. in 1757. He was educated at the College of William and Mary and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He fought at Guilford Court House and in the Yorktown Campaign. Stuart studied law under Thomas Jefferson and served in the Virginia House of Delegates.
